The Hands Behind Every Stitch

Juti-making is a sacred family craft. So is the way we preserve its ancestral dignity.

The Philosophy of Slowness

In the lanes of Bhinmal, in Jalore district, artisan families still cut the hide, work the embroidery by hand and give every pair its finished form themselves. Speed is the enemy of beauty.

Our Provenance

One Town: Marwar Bhinmal

Bhinmal, in Jalore district, is the town whose mojari and juti are known across India and abroad. Every pair this house sells is made there.

The Old Capital

Bhinmal

Kashidakari & Mojari

An ancient town in Jalore district, once the early capital of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. Its older names were Shrimal Nagar, Shrimala and Bhillamala — the origin of the Shrimali Brahmins' name — and the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang, travelling India between 631 and 645 CE, recorded it as Pi-lo-mo-lo, the capital of the Gurjara country. It is the birthplace of the mathematician-astronomer Brahmagupta, who composed his treatise in 628 CE, and of the Sanskrit poet Magha.

Signature Craft

Hand embroidery worked mostly by the women of Bhinmal, on a pair that weighs 100 to 200 grams

Step-by-Step Archive

What a Pair Goes Through

Six immutable phases executed entirely by hand, in the order they have always been done.

  1. Raw Material

    Step 01

    Hide selection and local curing

Locally cured leather, cut to size by hand for the pair.

  2. Sculpting

    Step 02

    Hand-Sculpting the Panna & Upper

Carved blade-by-blade using hereditary crescent raapi knives. Left and right contours are individually carved against seasoned sheesham wood lasts, for a natural anatomical fit.

  3. Embellishment

    Step 03

Adda Frame Zardozi & Resham Stitching

Velvets and silks are stretched across heavy wooden adda trestles. Artisans guide pure metallic dabka cords and resham floss needle-by-needle. A bridal upper commands up to twenty hours.

  4. Jewel-Work

    Step 04

    Mirror-Setting & Pearl Appliqué

Convex glass aabhla mirrors are caged securely under intersecting cotton-gilded threads. Micro seed pearls are individually knotted at the rear face so surfaces never abrade bare skin.

  5. Assembly

    Step 05

    Cotton-Thread Welting & Cushion Insole

The upper and the sole are stitched together with several strands of cotton thread, and the leather is hammered firm before the pair goes onto a wooden last to take its final shape.

  6. Final Form

    Step 06

    Final Hand Finish

Every completed pair is given a final polish by hand and then its finished form by the karigar who made it.

The Pagori Covenant

The Direct Guild
Wage Pact

In typical craft supply chains, commercial intermediaries stand between the maker and the buyer while hereditary artisans carry the risk. The guild pact is written to remove them: the workshop that makes a pair is the workshop that is paid for it.

When an artisan family is compensated with royal dignity, the reverence flows unimpeded into every single stitch.

— Guild Directive, Article 4
  1. Direct Payment

Payment settles to the family that made the pair once the workshop completes it. No intermediary sits between the maker and the buyer.

  2. Lifetime Healthcare & Ustad Pension

Health coverage and ophthalmology care for senior embroiderers, with an endowed pension once masters move into guild mentorship roles.

  3. The hands behind the pair

The embroidery is worked mostly by the women of Bhinmal, and the pair is finished by the karigar who shapes it on the last.
